University of Wisconsin-Madison student accused of sexually assaulting at least five women choked, slapped and raped victims, prosecutors say
The University of Wisconsin-Madison student accused of sexually assaulting numerous women on campus lured some of his victims to his apartment and choked, slapped and forced sex on them, prosecutors charge.
Alec Cook, 20, of Edina, Minn., now faces seven counts of second-degree sexual assault, three counts of third-degree sexual assault, two counts of strangulation, two counts of false imprisonment and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault as victims continue to come forward. A complaint filed Thursday includes three additional women and details alleged assaults dating back to March 2015 up until August of this year.
But "dozens of other females" said they had encounters with Cook and reported it to police after he was initially charged on Oct. 16., according to a search warrant filed in Dane County this week.
Police were able to identify some of the women through entries in black notebooks Cook kept, where he allegedly wrote the names of female students he was pursuing along with their interests and what he planned to do with them.
"The entries went on to document what he wanted to do with the females," Madison police investigator Grant Humerickhouse said. "Disturbingly enough, there were statements of 'kill' and statements of 'sexual' desires," he said.
Cook was initially charged last week after a woman called police to report an alleged sexual assault on Oct. 12.
The woman, who is not identified because she is a victim of sexual assault, says she was held against her will inside Cook's off-campus apartment where he choked her almost to the point of unconsciousness and proceeded to penetrate her painfully, prosecutors say.
He slapped her repeatedly in the face during intercourse, telling her, "You must like that. I always knew you were kinky," according to the criminal complaint.
The two had met up before the alleged attack for dinner at Chipotle and then studied together at one of the college's libraries. On their way to his apartment, she told Cook that she wasn't interested in "casual sex" with him, but that he proceeded to pressure her into hooking up anyway, the complaint states.
The day after the alleged assault she texted Cook saying she didn't want to see him anymore.
"My body hurts a lot today," she wrote him.
After she reported the alleged assault, at least four other women came forward, including two others, both 20-years-old, who were similarly lured back to his apartment after agreeing to go on a date with him.
The second woman to come forward says she was assaulted by Cook on March 20, 2015 and called police after seeing his mugshot in the news and "knew immediately" that it was him," the complaint reads.
Another woman came forward as well, accusing Cook of groping her at least 15 times while they were students in the same ballroom dancing class during the fall 2016 semester. Cook would "push up on her breasts or grab her buttocks" when they danced together, despite her repeatedly asking him to stop, the complaint reads.
Cook has denied the allegations against and told police during an interview last week that "deep down I am sexually insecure," and that didn't "feel comfortable" answering their questions.
His attorney said he has cooperated with authorities and that the accusations are the result of a social media and news "firestorm" over the case.
"Much of what has been on Facebook has been character assassination of my client," Christopher Van Wagner said on Wednesday. "He's been accused of serious crimes, but the media firestorm has prompted a lot of people to apparently go back and re-examine their relationships with him."
Cook is scheduled for a bail hearing on Thursday.
