‘I did think there was  a bit of a stigma,’ she says. ‘Would people think I was sad and old if I couldn’t find a man on my own? But then I noticed that friends at work were online dating all the time – there were even couples who had met that way – and they were in their 20s. After seeing a ‘tasteful’ TV advert, with ‘normal, attractive-but-not-too-attractive people’, Lorraine joined dating site eHarmony, and so began her search for a soulmate.

The fear of ‘stigma’ was shared by horse trainer and riding coach Angela Macdonald, 50, who lives in Ayrshire, Scotland. ‘I didn’t really fancy online dating,’ she says. ‘But I was a single mum with three young sons [now 14, and 13-year-old twins]. How exactly was I going to meet a man in the traditional way? I lived on a farm with no immediate neighbours, and no family around to help with childcare.’ Macdonald says her social life was non-existent, except for riding events and her sons’ sporting competitions.

‘Most of the adults there were either in couples, or were mums on their own,’ she says.  ‘I knew everyone in my village. What was I supposed to do?’ Macdonald joined one of the larger websites, but became frustrated because many of her dates were simply incompatible. ‘I have 40 animals,’ she says. ‘The men on this site insisted they adored animals and the countryside. In fact, most  of them only went as far as owning a dog.’ Finally, she was recommended a website called Muddy Matches, which is ‘made by country people, for country people’. ‘The members seemed straightforward, and at last, had similar interests,’ she says. ‘I “chatted” to a tree surgeon and a man who was running a farm that had been in his family for generations. That was far more my scene.’
