Prisoners use dating apps for illegal liaisons as Ministers launch new unit to target surge in smartphones in jails
“The dark web offers encrypted access to drugs, weapons and explicit images and is increasingly used by organised criminal gangs, including those behind bars, as a way of evading detection,” said an MoJ official.
The MoJ will use a portion of the £100 million extra pledged last month to create the unit which it says will be able to crack encrypted communications and analyse phones and SIM cards for contacts and messages.
Officials say it could unlock a treasure trove of intelligence on criminal gangs operating both inside and outside prison.
Lucy Frazer, the prisons minister, told The Daily Telegraph: “We know that the ways in which criminals conduct their business is advancing - with prisoners harnessing new technology and the dark web to further their operations behind bars.
“Bolstering our powers to detect and disrupt this kind of crime is a key element of our £100 million investment in prison security. Alongside airport-style scanners, metal detectors and phone blockers, we will crack down on those who continue to commit crime and wreak havoc in our jails.”
The prison service began its investigation into the Welsh “dating” prisoner after a tip off. He could not be identified from screenshots of his photo on the dating app that had been passed to investigators by a member of the public.
